​Public Paths

El Cerrito has dozens of public paths and stairways winding through its neighborhoods, parks, and open spaces. These paths are more than shortcuts: they connect neighborhoods, parks, schools, transit, and other destinations, often providing walking routes that are far shorter and more enjoyable than navigating El Cerrito’s winding, hilly streets.

Some paths are in good condition, while others have been neglected, blocked, or allowed to deteriorate. The Trail Trekkers have been advocating for years for a stronger city–community partnership to restore and improve these valuable public resources. We have offered to provide volunteer labor and help fund materials, allowing the City to accomplish improvements at very little cost.

There has been some progress: the City has included public path signage in its 2027–28 budget (external link), and it will allow the Trail Trekkers to help with routine maintenance. But the City has not yet committed funding or authorized volunteers to add treads, steps, or other improvements that could make deteriorated paths safer and easier to navigate.

We believe El Cerrito’s public paths deserve better. The Trail Trekkers will continue working with the City—and advocating for a practical partnership that puts community volunteers to work improving these paths for everyone.
