Saturday, November 1
Hike One: Fine Homes and Lost Trails. Visit two of the city’s loveliest parks, traipse well maintained public paths, and discover paths that have been blocked but await reclamation – all the while passing wonderful 1920s and midcentury modern homes and lovely gardens. Leader, Dave Weinstein 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at the bottom of Poinsett Park, corner of Poinsett and Harris avenues. Hike two: Restoring public paths. Meet with Janet Byron and other members of the Trekker’s Public Paths Committee as we visit five impassable paths that need restoration, and several paths whose charms we can enjoy. 1 to 3 p.m. Meet at the north fare gates at El Cerrito del Norte BART. Hike Three. The Joaquin Murietta Memorial Hike. Hear tales about the legendary bandit who was said to have used a famous rock outcrop in the El Cerrito hills as his lookout. We will also visit a rock outcrop marked by Native Americans, a restored wetlands, and pass through some of our city’s more picturesque neighborhoods. Leader, Dave Weinstein. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Meet at Baxter Creek Park, Ohlone Greenway at Conlon Avenue. |
Sunday, November 2:
Hike Four. The William Huber Hike. Let’s recall one of the founders of our city with a walk through some of El Cerrito’s most beautiful neighborhood paths and stairs, while also seeing some long-barricaded pathways and enjoying attractive parks. Leader Brian Richmond. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the Huber Park clubhouse, 7711 Terrace Drive. Hike Five. Cerrito Creek Stroll. Enjoy this peaceful creek as it winds through El Cerrito’s Creekside Park and portions of Richmond and Albany at the foot of Albany Hill, on this easy walk. Observe a Native American site and learn how Friends of Five Creeks worked over many years to restore habitat along this creek. Visit a relatively newly reopened section of the creek by El Cerrito Plaza. Leaders are Barbara Lass and Wade Huntley. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Meet at Creekside Park, 3499 Santa Clara Ave. |
