We now head to the northern part of the city and the first of several trails in the vicinity of Tassajara Park. The Barrett to Tassajara trail is a stairway and paved path connecting Barrett Ave, across from its intersection with La Honda Ave., with Tassajara Ave., just across the street from the park. The trail drops about 50 feet in elevation, mostly by steps with good railings on both sides.
At the top on Barrett, the #7 AC Transit bus stops right next to the stairs, before continuing up to the Arlington on its way from Del Norte BART to downtown Berkeley. Across the street is La Honda Ave. which is only one block long but has a trail at each end. La Honda Way (#1) straddles the border of El Cerrito and East Richmond Heights.
At the bottom is Tassajara Park, a city park with playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas and a pottery studio. Two other numbered paths run in and around the park. Tassajara Park Trail (#4) runs next to the playing field to the park clubhouse. It may be a site for future work by the Trekkers, installing treads and making other improvements. Tassajara Trail between Alva and Barrett avenues (#3) was the site of a project involving Girls Scouts from Troop 31352, who, working with the Trail Trekkers , the El Cerrito Community Garden Network and the city, planted flowers in formerly unused planters. The troop was honored with a proclamation from the city council at their meeting in September of 2013. There will be more about this when we return to Trail #3 in a few weeks.
